Fluoride Treatment
Fluoride treatment has many different benefits to your teeth. Fluoride treatments help prevent dental decay or cavities. Cavities are not just a problem for children, but for adult also. Many people who have had periodontal treatment have exposed root surfaces. These surfaces can get cavities easier than the hard enamel which is part of the crown or top of the tooth. Cavities can occur very easily with people who have a dry mouth. Having a dry mouth is a very common side effect of many, many medications. As we age, we usually take more medications and are more likely to have a dry mouth as a result of some of these medications. Frequent fluoride treatments will help reduce the likelihood of cavities.
Fluoride treatment is also beneficial in treating sensitivity. Sensitivity, especially to cold, is a side effect of periodontal treatment. It does improve with time and fluoride treatments can decrease the amount of time needed for sensitivity to improve.
Fluoride treatment is done both in the dental office during a periodontal maintenance visit and at home daily. Fluoride treatments in the office are recommended once per year for anyone who has exposed root surfaces and more frequently for people with a dry mouth. Daily fluoride treatments at home are recommended for people who have sensitive teeth or have a dry mouth.
