Bone Grafting or Regeneration

Bone grafting, or guided tissue regeneration, is a procedure that stimulates your body to make new bone that has been lost from periodontal disease.  This technique can only be used in certain situations.  It results in providing more bone strength for  your teeth and improving the outlook for teeth that might otherwise have been lost.

Bone grafting can repair implant sites with inadequate bone structure due to previous extractions, gum disease or injuries. Bone grafting is a surgical procedure that involves the placement of a special material or membrane.  This covers the area that will grown bone.  Bone grafts are usually used with the membrane.  Most of these membranes resorb or dissolve by themselves, while others will require removal.

Other bio-active materials, or growth factors, may also be used to regenerate missing bone.  Emdogain© gel is a product designed to trigger bone regeneration using a protein called amelogenin. GEM21S© is a product combining an active growth factor protein, platelet-derived growth factor, with a synthetic bone substitute material, beta-tricalcium phosphate.
