Why Your Jawbone Matters
Think of your jawbone as the ground floor of a building. Without a solid base, you can’t construct anything stable on top. Dental implants need adequate bone height, width, and density to integrate properly. When there’s not enough bone, the implant won’t have anywhere to anchor, and the whole procedure becomes impossible.
Beyond implants, bone loss affects your facial structure. As the jawbone shrinks, your face can take on a sunken appearance that makes you look older. Your remaining teeth might start shifting position, creating bite problems you never had before. Bone grafting stops this progression and actually reverses some of the damage.
What Happens During the Procedure
The bone grafting process sounds more intimidating than it actually is. Dr. Bruce Wiland and our team place grafting material in the area where bone has deteriorated. This material can come from several sources:
- Your own bone from another area of your jaw or body
- Donor bone that’s been carefully processed and sterilized
- Synthetic materials designed to mimic natural bone
- Animal-derived bone that’s been treated to remove all organic components
The grafting material acts as a scaffold. Your body recognizes it as bone and starts building new bone cells around it. Over several months, the graft integrates with your existing bone, creating a stronger, denser structure. Eventually, your natural bone replaces most of the grafting material.
We perform the procedure right here in our Indianapolis office using local anesthesia. Most patients feel pressure but no pain during the grafting. You’ll probably have some swelling and discomfort for a few days afterward, but nothing you can’t manage with over-the-counter pain medication and ice packs.
Different Types of Grafts for Different Needs
Not all bone grafts work the same way. Socket preservation grafts happen right after tooth extraction. We fill the empty socket with grafting material to prevent the bone from collapsing as it heals. This approach maintains the bone volume so you can get an implant later without needing additional grafting.
Ridge augmentation rebuilds bone along the top of your jaw. When you’ve been missing teeth for a while, the ridge can become too thin to support implants. We add width and height through grafting so implants have room to fit properly.
Sinus lift procedures address bone loss in your upper back jaw. Your sinuses sit right above this area, and when bone deteriorates, the sinus cavity expands downward. We carefully lift the sinus membrane and place bone grafting material underneath, creating space for implants where there wasn’t any before.
Recovery and What Comes Next
Healing from bone grafting takes patience. Your body needs three to six months to build sufficient new bone around the graft. During this time, you’ll come back for checkups so we can monitor how things are progressing. We use imaging technology to confirm that the bone has reached the density needed for implant placement.
You’ll need to stick with soft foods for the first week or two. Avoid disturbing the graft site by being gentle when you brush near the area. Don’t smoke, since tobacco drastically slows bone healing and increases the risk of graft failure.
Success Rates Tell the Real Story
Modern bone grafting techniques have excellent success rates, typically above 90% when patients follow post-operative instructions. The procedure has become so predictable that we can often plan your entire implant timeline before we even start grafting.
Patients from Kokomo, Richmond, and throughout the Indianapolis area trust us with their bone grafting needs because we’ve spent years perfecting our techniques. We understand that losing bone feels discouraging, but grafting gives you a genuine second chance at implant treatment.
